When Your Dog Decides To Be A Dog

Y’all this is a sad time for me.  Lollie, who has mostly just been a catchild since I adopted her, is slowly but surely turning into a dog.  One might say, “Hi, you’re insane”, but let me just give you a little background.  K.

I adopted Lollie for the purpose of having a dog.  The stronger our bond became, in combination with raging 20-something baby fever hormonal instincts, she pretty much just became my replacement baby.  She is not like any other dog in the sense that she literally acts like a baby.  Anyone who has witnessed this can vouch for me.  She snuggles.  She plops her head down on your chest and shoulder.  She likes to be little spoon.  She has slept in the bed with me for the past 4 1/2 years.

Things have changed now that we have added a live-in boyfriend and an actual dog to the mix.  Since Zita doesn’t like to sleep on her dog bed, Lollie would sneak out of bed in the middle of the night to sleep in it.  I am not sure if this is because there is significantly less bed real estate to hog, or if she wants to be closer to her new sister, or that her new sister has actually taught her how to act like a dog.

The dog bed I got for Zita is too big for the bedroom, so I have moved it downstairs.  After some very passive aggressive “I am going to walk all over you and paw your entire body in your sleep” messages, I decided to get Lollie a bed like her friend Betsy has.  She made it very clear during Betsy’s visit that she wants one.

I went to Costco this past weekend and bought her a Betsybed.  I placed one of my boyfriend’s old comforters on it so it’s extra fluffy.  In all actuality, I probably just could have plopped the comforter onto the floor and saved 40 bucks.  She has slept in her Big Girl Betsybed just about every night since.  She also won’t get out of it for anything.  Not to eat.  Not to potty.  Just for treats, and even that’s a stretch.

Y’all, I am devastated.  I am going through the withdrawal and detachment of a parent who has finally kicked their kid out of the bed after 4 1/2 years.  Even my boyfriend is sad that she doesn’t want to snuggle with us anymore.  Doesn’t she like being kicked around all night by the humans?

It is taking everything in me not to take the bed away so she will come back to mama.  I suppose I just have to accept that she’s a dog now.  And I have to admit… I am sleeping better now that I am not worrying about punting a tiny dog around the bed.

Thanks for stopping by!  See y’all next time…

Marissa
